| Map |
| West Bengal is situated in eastern India. To its northeast lie the states of Assam and Sikkim and the country Bhutan. To the west it borders the state of Jharkhand, Bihar and Orissa and to the northwest lies the country of Nepal. West Bengal forms part of the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal, together with Bangladesh to the east. The exact origin of the word Bengal is unknown, although it is believed to be derived from the Bang tribe that settled in the area around the year 1000 BC. The region that is now West Bengal was part of a number of empires and kingdoms during the past two millennia. The city of Kolkata, then Calcutta, served as the capital of British India for many years. Following India's independence in 1947 Bengal was divided into two separate areas, West Bengal, a state of India, and East Pakistan, belonging to the new nation of Pakistan. West bengal is the most densely populated state in India. Agriculturally dependent it occupies only 2.7% of the India's land area but supports over 8% of Indian population. West Bengal has been ruled by the Left Front for over 30 years, making it the world's longest-running democratically elected communist government. |
