| The climate of Uttar Pradesh is predominantly sub-tropical but weather conditions change significantly with location and season. Summer It is very hot in the summers across the state but slightly cooler in the east. The summer lasts from April to August. Daytime temperatures usually touche around 45¡ãC in Western Uttar Pradesh and the Agra area and around 42¡ãC in Eastern Utter Pradesh. The highest temperature recorded in the State was 49.9¡ãC at Gonda on May 8th 1958. Nights are relatively cooler and the temperature comes down to as low as 28 ¡ãC because of the cool breeze. Winter Winters in Uttar Pradesh are a lot cooler with day temperatures pleasant at around 24¡ãC. Nights are chilly with temperatures reaching as low as 2 to 4¡ãC across the state. The winter begins around Mid-November and continues until the end of February. In the Himalayan region of the State annual snowfall averaging 3 to 5 metres is common between December and March. Monsoon Rainfall in Uttar Pradesh varies considerably. While in the South West the monsoon is very moderate, in the east it rains very heavily in short spells. The average annual rainfall varies from 105-110 centimeters in places like Allahabad and Varanasi to as low as 45-50 centimeters in Agra. Relative humidity in semi-arid regions such as Agra can be very high. About 90 percent of the rainfall occurs during the southwest monsoon, lasting from about June to September. With most of the rainfall concentrated during this four-month period, floods are a recurring problem and cause heavy damage, particularly in the eastern part of the state where the Himalayan-origin rivers flow with a very low north-south gradient.
