| Air Flights from Delhi and Amritsar link all the three main regions of the state, the Kashmir Valley, Ladakh and the Jammu region. Indian Airlines and various private airlines operate regular flights to Srinagar, Jammu and Leh. Jet Airways operates services between Jammu and Delhi, and Jammu and Srinagar. Flights are available to Leh from Delhi, Srinigar and Jammu throughout the year. During the winter months this can be the only way to reach Ladakh as the roads are closed. Rail There is at the moment only one railway in the Jammu & Kashmir state, linking Jammu with Pathankot in Punjab (see the transport section in Jammu for more information). Buses Due to the lack of railways in Jammu & Kashmir, buses are one of the most common forms of transport around the state (along with shared jeeps). Buses connect all the main towns and many of the small villages. Check the link above for bus routes and timetables. Bus services to and from Ladakh are often cancelled during the winter months when the high passes are closed due to snow (see the transport section in Ladakh for more information). Jeeps Shared jeeps are another popular way of getting aroung Jammu and Kashmir. The jeeps are usually faster and more comfortable than buses, but also more expensive. They also usually only operate between the main towns and less around the smaller villages. |
