| Trains The railway system in India, with 2 million employees is the biggest employer in the world. Its a pleasure for the small budget traveler. Their prices are really cheap if you go second or third class. Every time you buy a ticket you will need to fill out a bookings form with the train number, date of traveling, and passenger information. To find your train number, departure time and fare you can ask at the enquiries desk. Fill out your form and Queue again for your ticket. Every ticket office has a enquiries desk as well a separate desk for foreigners and another just for women and senior citizens. In the transport section for every town you can find the train numbers for the most popular destinations and a link to the Indian Railway site. There you can enter the train number to find the timetable and fare for your chosen journey. The site covers the entire Indian railway network. Buses The bus system of India will connect you to almost every town, city and village in the country. The cheapest way is local transport buses but there are also express and deluxe buses. Between the bigger towns buses will depart more than once an hour. When you are in more remote areas you should check departure times as there is sometimes only one bus a day. These buses will be crowded. In our city transport sections we will try to provide you with up to date travel information for specific routes. Jeeps In certain areas, particularly in mountainous regions there will be jeep services between some towns. They are often more expensive than buses but sometimes there are no bus services as an alternative. We will give more information in individual transport sections. Local Transport To get around in a town the rickshaw is the most used form of transport. It is wise to agree on a price before departure. A good rule is about RS 10 per 1,5 km. Rickshaw drivers are hard bargainers and you may want to try a few before you find one that will take you for a good price. Don't forget you often have the alternative to walk. |
| Flying A few cheap airlines provide domestic flights all over India. Below are some links for booking tickets online. In our experience online booking can be a problem. Booking with an agent can be easier and you will usually only pay around 100 rupees more. |
