| Surajkund Surajkund is an 11th century water reservoir just south of Delhi. The Lake, built by a Rajput king Surajpal Tomar, represents the rising sun. The ruins of a Sun temple lie around the lake. The place is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Haryana for The Surakund Crafts Mela, an annual fair held in February in a bid to promote the traditional handicrafts and handlooms of the state and India. Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary The Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary is host to more than a 100 species of migratory birds during the winter season. Kurukshetra 160 km north of Delhi is the ancient town of Kurukshetra, believed to be the site of the war described in the great Indian epic Mahabharata and the place where Lord Krishna recited the Bhagvat Geeta. Kurukshetra is visited by millions of pilgrims, especially during solar and lunar eclipses. Panipat Three fabled battles of Panipat remain important landmarks in the history of India. The first between Babar and Ibrahim Lodhi paved the way for the great Mughal Empire in India. Thanesar Thanesar is an old and historic town on the banks of the Ghaggar river in Haryana state of northern India. It is located in Kurukshetra District, approximately 160 km northwest of Delhi. Prabhakar Vardhan, father of Harshavardhana, was the ruler of Thanesar and the first king of the Vardhan dynasty with his capital at Thanesar. Sannihit Sarovar Sannihit Sarovar is believed to be the meeting point of seven sacred Saraswatis. The sarovar, according to popular belief, contains sacred water. Bathing in the waters of the tank on the day of Amavasya (night of complete darkness) or on the day of an eclipse bestows blessings equivalent to performing the ashvamedh yajna (a fire ceremony where a horse is sacraficed). Hissar A town known today for its flourishing cotton industry, is also a town with some of the oldest ruins in India. While most of the Indus valley sites are situated across the Pakistan border, there are 3 major sites from the Harappan period in Hissar. Apart from that, Hissar is also home to Feroz Shah Tughlak’s palace, fort, and tomb. |
